Fundraising Profiles

Alltel Pavilion at Walnut Creek (AP) - The Cary High Band Boosters (CBB) typically man multiple booths for every event at AP over the summer. The concert season begins in April and continues until mid October, typically encompassing 40 to 50 events. The booths we work sell beer. Because of this, no one under 21 may work these events. Those that do work need to have attended a Training for Intervention Procedures (TIPS) training seminar, which is offered at the facility. Concerts vary in start time but typically start at 7:30. We ask that volunteers arrive at 4:30 or 5:00 (please ask) and we're pretty successful at getting shut down, cleaned up, and inventory counted before the concert ends to beat traffic (about 10 PM). Concerts mainly are scheduled Thursdays through Sundays. The CBB earns a percentage of sales and therefore our hourly rate varies. You will typically earn $7.00 to $9.00 an hour with rates being calculated by the month and not the event. Required clothing includes khaki or tan pants or shorts (you'll be outdoors) and a white shirt with collar (polo type).

RBC Center - The CBB typically staff one concession booth for a select number of entertainment and sports events at the RBC from fall to spring. The season begins at the end of October and continues until the end of April. The booths we work sell beer and food, or just food. No alcohol can be sold at NC State Men's Basketball games. The minimum age to volunteer for any RBC event is 21 years of age. Those pouring at alcohol events need to have attended an ALE training seminar. Start times vary with night games and weekend dates. We normally sign in at 5PM for the event and we leave between 9:30 and 10:30 depending on the game length. The typical release time for NCSU games is about 9:30. The times for concerts and other entertainment events can vary. The CBB earns a percentage of sales, so the typical hourly rate is often between $7.50 and $9.00 an hour, with rates calculated by the month and not the event. Required clothing includes black pants, green Cary Band shirt, dark shoes or dark sneakers, and a Cary Band hat. You will be provided with a black apron.

Gift Wrap / Cary Towne Center Mall Events - The CBB typically gift-wraps for major holidays. We gift-wrap for Christmas from the Friday after Thanksgiving until approximately 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve when the mall closes. Other holidays when we gift-wrap include Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and Father's Day. We are paid by donation, which means the more we wrap and collect in donations the higher the hourly rate of pay. For the slower holidays (Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and Father's Day) that translates to about $7.00 an hour. However, during the month of December when the gift-wrap booth is open for the holiday season the hourly rate can translate into much more. Anyone over 12 years-of-age can gift-wrap but must be responsible, be able to wrap gifts, and act professionally as they are representing the Cary High Bands. Younger children are not permitted in the gift-wrap booth during shifts. We have a business casual dress code while working gift-wrap, which means NO jeans, sneakers, flip flops, t-shirts, or hats. We suggest you dress like you're going to church or to a nice but not too fancy restaurant. Students who are working the gift wrap booth directly after school should have the proper attire with them and plan accordingly.

Fruit / Poinsettia Sales - These fundraisers usually occur in tandem in mid fall. Packets are sent home with kids and we ask that families do their best to sell as much as they can. A percentage of every item sold will be applied towards your assessment. For fruit last year, sellers earned between $7.00 and $9.50 per box of fruit sold and $3.75 to $5.00 for each plant sold. We try to promote these items as Christmas gifts and people are usually very receptive to buying them. Once orders have been completed, the CBB places their order and each family must pick up and deliver their items to their own customers.

Entertainment 200x Sales - Entertainment 200x books are coupon books with hundreds of dollars of savings in coupons from local restaurants and other events. This item is very much like fruit/poinsettia sales. Students are given packets and the family is asked to sell as many books as possible. Last year books were priced at $25 and families had $12.50 of that price applied towards their assessment. These are normally on sale from the beginning of band camp through September.

Event One Activities: NCSU Football and Women's Basketball; Duke Football and Men's Basketball - Volunteers were asked to be ticket takers and ushers at NC State Football and Women's Basketball games, and Duke Football and Men's Basketball games. The locations for these activities are Carter-Finley Stadium, Reynolds Coliseum on campus for the women's games, Wallace Wade Stadium, and Cameron Indoor Stadium. Volunteers earn $8.00 per hour for work with varying degrees of difficulty. We are asked to wear tan or khaki pants and dark shoes (no sandals). The seasons for these various activities runs from August through March.

Yankee Candles - This is a fall fundraiser in which students are given packets and families are asked to sell as many candles as possible. A certain percentage of what is sold is applied to your student assessment. Once orders have been completed, the CBB places their order and each family must pick up and deliver their items to their own customers.

Cookie Dough and Coffee - Students are given packets and families are asked to sell as much of the cookie dough and coffee as possible. A certain percentage (e.g. 44%) of the cookie dough that is sold is applied to your student assessment. As for the coffee, 50% of what is sold is applied towards your assessment. Once orders have been completed, the CBB places their order and each family must pick up and deliver their items to their own customers.

Candy Sales - A candy sale is done on an "as needed" basis. The CBB will order a large volume of candy and ask that students/families sell the candy at set prices that return a profit to the CBB.

Band Day - Cary Band Day is one of the biggest annual band events anywhere in the southeast. On a Saturday in late October or early November, between 30 and 40 marching bands from all over the southeast are invited to compete at this competition. Cary is the host band for this competition, and they put on an exhibition but do not compete.

With an event this large, the number of attendees is very significant, with people coming just to watch as well as those that come as part of each marching band's entourage. Since we're the host, we are also the "providers" for the day. This takes an enormous amount of planning and volunteer help. ANY BAND RELATED PERSON WORKING OR VOLUNTEERING FOR CARY BAND DAY WOULD NOT BE DIRECTLY COMPENSATED. However all money earned becomes part of the income of the CBB. By working to earn this money you will help drive down the cost of the following year's assessment.

Among the numerous activities taking place that day is the running of a concession stand all day long (from 10 AM to 10 PM). This involves cooking hamburgers and hotdogs, serving pizza, BBQ sandwiches drinks and snacks, etc. Volunteers are also needed as band hosts, ticket takers, program and souvenir sellers, security, set-up, tear down, parade monitors and many other things.

REMEMBER:

Any volunteer at these events represents the Cary High Bands and therefore should represent us with the utmost dignity as we represent ourselves.

Any person you know can work for you to earn money towards your assessment. Have a friend come to Alltel Pavilion with you. Have a grandparent gift-wrap with you. Have a band student's sibling help sell candy. Have a friend take your order forms for fruit/poinsettias/candles/cookies/coffee with them to work. All will earn money for your assessment.

Any money earned above this year's assessment will be held in your account for next year. If you have a student graduating and another attending Cary High within the next few years, make arrangements with the treasurer and your money can be held in our accounts for your future student. We look forward to working with you!
